The term “root canal” is synonymous with intense pain. Many people think of it as the most painful dental procedure. But it’s not. Advances in dentistry have rendered the entire root canal process akin to getting a cavity filled.
A root canal alleviates pain by repairing severe tooth decay. At Pro Health Dental, we can help save your natural tooth with a root canal procedure, which ends up being far cheaper and easier dental implants or partial dentures.
A Closer Look at the Root Canal
Each tooth is composed of three layers:
Outer tooth (enamel)
Middle tooth (dentin)
Inner tooth (pulp)
The inner hollow at the tooth’s center is called a “root canal,” which encloses the pulp and the tooth’s nerve. When pulp is exposed due to decay (or blunt trauma), it causes intense pain. At this time a root canal procedure is more than necessary, because exposed pulp is vulnerable to infection, providing an arena for bacteria to multiply. An abscess can often form as a result — a pus-filled cavity that grows in the tooth’s root.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal generally involves 3 distinct steps.
Evaluation: We take X-rays where we assess damage to the root canal, looking for signs of infection.
Root Canal Procedure: We apply optional local anesthesia to the tooth in question. Many times the tooth’s nerve will have died, rendering anesthesia unnecessary. We then drill into your tooth to clean out exposed pulp, decayed tissue, bacteria, and any other form of debris.
Root Canal Follow-Up: Further restoration might be needed to bring your smile back to status quo (fillings or crowns, for instance). We provide you with the care you need every step of the way, ensuring your root canal procedure meets all required specifications.
