A root canal relieves the pain caused by infection and inflammation of the tooth’s innermost layer, the dental pulp. It can save a tooth from needing to be removed. When a tooth is severely damaged, whether from decay, trauma, or even previous dental work, the pulp is left vulnerable to infection. This part of the tooth is packed with nerves and blood vessels, making any damage extremely painful. If left alone too long, an abscess may form, or the infection could spread to other teeth or even other parts of the body.
During root canal therapy, the damaged pulp is removed from the tooth. The inside of the tooth is shaped, cleaned, and disinfected. A special rubber-like filler called “gutta-percha” is used to fill in the tooth and the hole is capped, preventing future infections.
Most of the time, a root canal treatment is followed by placing a dental crown to help protect the tooth and restore functionality.
Root canal therapy is highly successful. This procedure often prevents the need for a tooth to be removed later on.
