When patients choose to have veneers, they want to improve the aesthetics of their smile with custom shells crafted from porcelain or composite resin material. Veneers are especially valuable for improving teeth that are chipped, stained, or misshaped. They are purposed for cosmetic improvements, but they can also be part of a smile makeover which results in health improvements.
Composite veneers are also referred to as direct veneers and they can be applied in a single dental visit. They can last for up to seven years, and can be replaced after this time period. Porcelain veneers are in contrast, known as indirect veneers. They are custom-made to fit your teeth and most patients require two visits to have them fitted. They can last for up to 15 years, and in some cases, even longer.
The Veneers Treatment Process
During the preliminary stages of the treatment, the dentist will take x-rays and determine the next step of the treatment plan. Following x-rays, your tooth will be prepared by having a half a millimeter of enamel shaved off. An impression is then created from the teeth to prepare the shape and design of the veneers.
Once the veneers are ready for placement, your dentist will determine the appropriate fit and color. They are cleaned thoroughly and the surface is roughened to improve the adhesion of the veneers. A special cement is applied to attach the veneer to the affected tooth. With ultraviolet light, the veneer is hardened onto the tooth.
It is recommended that you schedule additional follow-up visits a few weeks after the procedure to ensure the veneers are secure and do not have any defects.
